MOTV valve
Lightweight construction for hydrogen applications
AluScal R&D project
As part of the publicly funded AluScal research project, we have realized innovative valve housings using additive manufacturing. Through the targeted use of optimized structures, we were able to achieve a weight reduction of over 30% compared to conventional valves. This opens up new possibilities for lightweight applications, especially in areas where every gram counts.
Material
AlSc alloy, stainless steel
Special feature
Topology-optimized geometry
Use
Hydrogen tanks, valve technology
New alloy in use
A central element of the project is the use of a new type of aluminum-scandium alloy, which offers an exceptional combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and low weight. Additive manufacturing allows complex geometries and internal structures to be realized that would not be feasible using conventional manufacturing processes.

Certification in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive
In addition to aluminum-scandium, we were also able to successfully demonstrate the production of valves made of 1.4404 stainless steel. This variant enables production in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive, which ensures use in demanding industrial applications, such as in the chemical or process industry.
"The additively manufactured tank valves made from the innovative AlSc alloy, developed in the AluScal R&D project, offer a significant weight reduction combined with high strength. Optimized geometries enable maximum lightweight construction potential for demanding applications. Made of stainless steel, the valves can also be approved as pressure equipment."
